I know I have been absent from my blog for quite a while.  I thought I'd share some photos with you from a recent trip to Scottsdale, AZ to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West.  If you ever get a chance to visit, it is quite wonderful.  The tour lasted 90 minutes, and our tour guide was very knowledgeable.  Photos weren't allowed inside, but we were allowed to sit in some of the furniture

My sister, Pamela, and I went for an outing at The Mission Inn in Riverside, CA.  It is a wonderful old hotel that is beautifully decorated each year.  I tried to take a couple of pictures at night when the lights were on, but they didn't do it justice.  There is a pedestrian mall on the block with various shops and restaurants.  There is also an ice skating rink on the mall.  It was so much fun

We drove a stretch of old Route 66 in Tucumcari, New Mexico.  There are numerous forgotten businesses, but some of them are being rejuvenated. The Blue Swallow Motel is an example of a little gem on 66.  The note on the door told everyone that the owners were on vacation.  I would have liked to go into the lobby area as it is also a gift shop, and it looked so neat and organized.  Maybe next

We have seen this giant cross from a distance along I40 in Texas, but had never stopped to see it.  This year as we approached the site, we decided to go see what it was all about.  Quite the place to see.  If you have the chance to get off I40 to take a look you'll be impressed - the cross is 190 feet tall! I received some old photos from a relative recently, and this was among them.  It is a photo I had never seen, so I was happy to receive it. This photo, taken in 1957, is of my mother, my sister and me.  We were visiting relatives on their farm in Minnesota.  My sister and I were wearing 'farm play clothes'. My sisters and I enjoyed the Picker Sisters series, and really like some of the creative furniture and accessories they made from the rusted junk.  My sister, who lives in LA, went to take a look at the I - 10 Home store on Melrose, but it is closed with a for lease sign on the windows.  Too bad!  We were looking forward to seeing the creations from the show.

I finished Emily's wall hanging.  I decided to use the original photograph in this piece rather than printing the photograph onto fabric as I usually do.  The background fabric is a pale turquoise and gold printed vintage fabric.  The largest lace section is from the remnants of an antique dress.  I used additional antique lace, mother of pearl buttons and antique brocade ribbon.  The piece is

Kentucky is known for its Bourbon Wiskey, and Maker's Mark Distillery is a beautiful place to visit and tour.  I didn't realize that there are so many rules that must be followed to call a wiskey - bourbon.  For instance, the charred white oak barrels can only be used once.  Maker's Mark sends their used barrels to Scotland for use in making Scotch Whiskey.  At the end of the tour you are given

I just love all the old photos.  But, I'm also saddened by them because, as in this case, there is no information about the photo at all.  It must have been a family reunion of sorts as there are several generations in the picture.  I assume the older couple in the center are the patriarchs of the family.  As always, use the photo as you wish.

I finished this little fabric book a few days ago, but just got around to taking pictures of it.  I used unbleached muslin for the book structure.  The book is embellished with various scraps of fabric, lace, trims, buttons, pins and cute pictures of children with their bikes, trikes and wagons.  The photos are printed onto prepared white cotton fabric sheets.  The overall size is 5" x 10.5".

We had a swarm of honey bees this morning that settled onto two trees.  The largest swarm of bees on one tree is about 2 ft x 1 ft.  The smaller swarm is hanging from a branch and totals about 6 - 8 inches.  As I write this, the smaller one has moved, but the larger one is still on the tree.

We stayed in Joplin two weeks ago, and attended Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church.  There isn't much left of the church or the town of Joplin.  I am so sorry for the lives lost, the injured and for the destruction of these peoples lives.  They are in our prayers.

Back in the 1970s I used to make terrariums, and I have been wanting to make one for a while now.  Of course the selections of terrarium bottles back then was great.  I settled for a large canister/cookie jar.  I admit it was much easier to plant than one of the skinny neck ones I used to make.  Now I will have to work on getting the climate control correct so that it can maintain itself.

Recently, I sewed a few religious icons.  The images are of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus that are from a Lunagirl collage sheet.  I printed the image sheet onto a prepared fabric sheet.  I used vintage fabrics and other items to create each one.

We visited Fort Reno near El Reno, Oklahoma.  It began as a military camp in 1874 during the Indian Wars.  Buffalo soldiers were stationed there, and soldiers also assisted with the land runs of 1892 and 1894.  Benjamin H. Clark, chief of scouts for Seventh Cavalry, was caretaker of Fort Reno in 1908, and is buried in the fort's cemetery.   During World War II Fort Reno served as an internment

The Nashville, TN Parthenon located in Centennial Park is very interesting to visit.  The Parthenon is one of the buildings that was built in 1897 in Centennial Park for the 100 year birthday of Nashville.  There were many other building and they were made of plaster.  After the celebration that lasted for 6 months, they were all torn down except for the Parthenon.  In later years the exterior

We stopped at the Ryman Auditorium this evening, but were too late for the tour.  I snapped a few pictures of the beautiful building that used to be the home of the Grand Ole Opry.  It was originally built as a church in 1891.  We'll do the tour in a future visit.

I found this rusty chair on Saturday while we were in Glendale, KY.  Well, before I left town, the chair had convinced me to take it home.  Here it is on the front porch: This is what it looks like with its cushion.  I'll use this chair next summer under the large Maple tree in the front yard.  It is light weight and will be easy to move to the yard.

We went to see the Eagles on Saturday night, October 16 at the new KFC Yum Center in downtown Louisville, KY.  What a fantastic show!  They sounded so good, and they played for three hours.  If you ever get a chance to see them, I highly recommend their show.   I bought a t-shirt that depicts their Hotel California album cover.  I snapped a close up shot of the front and back of the shirt.

Here is a peek at the fabric book I made for my sister for her birthday.  It is filled with pictures of the two of us when we were children that I printed onto white cotton.  I added pockets to the pages to hold little notes of shared memories.  She loved it!

This turns out great.  To make it easy, I used a pie crust from the refrigerator section of the grocery.  But you could make the pie crust in this recipe or make your own favorite pie crust recipe.  Be sure to use the parchment paper to save yourself a cleanup from the filling that escapes the pie.

I used a piece of the wonderful burned ceiling tin that I selvaged from a razed building here in Rineyville for the wall hanging. The tin is sewed to the wall hanging with glass beads that I added at each hole. The background fabric is part of a vintage towel. The pastel picture of bluebirds is from an old greeting card, and it is printed on white cotton.  It is sewn to a piece of cotton floral

I have a lot of old snapshots in photo albums from the 1920s.  As near as I can tell, the albums depict the Carroll, Iowa area. I enjoy looking at how women dressed in those days.  Aren't these dresses cute?  It would be fun to know about the doll too.

This is the small herb garden I planted recently.  It is a work in progress.  I probably won't add any more plants, but I want to add rocks etc.  Planted here from back to front are, Grapefruit Mint, Sweet Basil, Rosemary, Greek Oregano, Sage, Parsley and Thyme.  It will be interesting to see what comes up next year on its own, and what I need to replant.  The herbs are handily accessible

Thomas Douglas Tonyan My brother-in-law tragically passed away from injuries he suffered in an automobile accident on Wednesday, July 7th.  It is impossible to believe he is isn't with us any longer.  Tom was a brilliant jazz musician who played the piano, organ and keyboard.  He had a witty sense of humor, and had an infectious laugh that I can hear now.  He was a loving man who is deeply missed

Happy 4th of July to you all. During a break in the hot weather a couple of days ago, we spent a girls' day out at Stream Cliff Herb Farm in Indiana.  We had a lovely lunch, and enjoyed the beautiful grounds.  I was inspired to plant a small herb garden of my own, and purchased a few plants.  My herb garden is a work in progress, but has come a long way from the weed patch from which it started.

I found these two photos at an antique store on our trip to Kentucky.  The condition of both of them is quite poor.  But, I will be able to use them in a project without the worry of ruining pristine antique photos.

This past weekend we attended the annual Bungalow Heaven home tour in Pasadena.  This is a wonderful neighborhood whose Craftsman style houses were built in the early 1900s.  Each year they offer a home tour of about eight houses.  It starts in McDonald park where you pick up your tickets and catalog which includes a map, plus extensive information about each house.  All the homes are within

I found this double bed size old quilt top recently on an antique shop outing.  I am not a traditional quilter, and don't plan to back and quilt this.  I bought it because I think it has some great old fabric prints.  I will probably use it to make pillow covers. I scanned and printed flowers, that I found in my mother's flower press, onto white cotton.  That is the subject for this 12" x 12" wall hanging that I created from, vintage fabrics, lace, buttons and trim.  My rhyme is also printed onto white cotton and highlighted with Twinkling H2o paints.  I used letter beads to spell the title "Pretty Flowers" at the bottom of the piece.

This was my dad's grade school in South Dakota - Meyer School.  Isn't it a cute little schoolhouse? This old photo of a Carroll, Iowa Store & Office setting was taken in January 1921.  By zooming into the photo, I was able to see several 'clues'.  The storefront sold not only lighting, but also Hoover products, and the address on the door is 119.  There is an Iowa Heat & Power cashiers window, and the calendars on the walls, from the American Saving Bank, tell the date.  The office machines

I am participating in an ATC swap with my Cloth Paper Studio online group.  My take on the theme, Landscape, is Urban Landscape.  I made two just the same.  The background fabric is rusted to give them a 'gritty city' look.  I used various scraps of vintage fabrics for the buildings.

We are scheduled to head back to California on Monday, Nov. 2nd.  We will spend nearly a week on the road for the return trip.  It is nice to take our time and visit places along the way.  This year part of the route we are going to take is new to us - from Little Rock, AK we will be driving I 30 across Texas and catch up with I 10 in New Mexico.  I will try to post pictures we take along the way

The only information I have about this photograph is the 1929 date written on the back of the photograph. I used it once for the subject in an earlier wallhanging where I named her Alice. I was snooping around in John's workshop and spotted a ring of old keys. He said I could use them in my projects, and I have something in mind. They were covered in a greasy kind of dirt, so I cleaned them enough to get rid of that without making them look like new. I think I may use all of them in one collage.

Another year and another Rineyville Day Parade. We grab our coffee and lawn chairs, and head out to the yard to watch the parade go by. This group of young people look like they had great fun together.  The photos are from albums I have had for quite a while.  They are printed on white cotton and then collaged with bits and pieces of vintage fabrics, trims and buttons.  The finished size is 4" x 6" for each quiltie, and a piece of trim added at the top for easy hanging.

Isn't this a funny little ant hill?  This ant hill is between the bricks on the front walkway.  We have had quite a bit of rain the past few days, and the air is very damp.  The little grains of dirt the ants pile onto the hill are stacking taller and taller - about 3" to 4" for this one.

Manning Iowa is a town about 25 miles from Carroll, Iowa and about 100 miles from Des Moines.  I have a few photo albums of people in Carroll County, Iowa.  I believe that most of the pictures are in Carroll, but this one depicts a Manning Butter and Ice Cream truck.  It is fun to look into the past like this, don't you agree?

John and I went with two other couples to ride in the Louisville Mayor's Hike & Bike Ride on Labor Day. It was a 14.9 mile course that was a fun ride. The police were directing traffic at every intersection, and most of the street was closed to traffic which made it feel very safe to ride. I found a little time this afternoon to do a little sewing.  I made this little romantic quiltie depicting a woman.  Her image is printed on white cotton and then collaged with vintage fabric, a piece from a hanky, lace, rick rack and a pearl button. The finished piece measures about 5" x 7".

I recently participated in a cloth doodle swap with my Cloth Paper Studio group. I just made one to swap for one, and received mine today. Isn't it beautiful? Margaret Field made it. I just love it! I made these little tags today from images that I cut from an old Piggly Wiggly recipe booklet. The booklet has various advertisements and I decided to use some of the smaller ones to make tags. The booklet isn't marked with a date, but some of the photographs depict people wearing clothing that looks like early 1900s. I listed these on my Etsy shop this evening.

I made a few tags the other day that I covered with cut outs from a 1927 woman's magazine. Then I sewed vintage buttons to each one of the tags and topped them with a piece of vintage narrow rick rack to replace the string hanger that came attached to the tags. These were a lot of fun to make, and I think I will be making more of them out of some old ephemera that I have been collecting.

I found these photos at the Pomona Antique Fair in May. The top two are studio type photos, and the bottom two are tintypes.Thomas is the name I have given the man in the tintype on the bottom right. I am currently working on an original piece with his tintype, and have created a short narrative for him as well.The two women in the tintype on the bottom left look so prim and proper don't they?

John had his fiftieth high school reunion on Saturday. We were suppose to dress "fifties" for the party. Here we are ready to go - both in jeans and typical shirts. I have on penny loafers and a scarf tied around my neck. We had a great time and danced, danced, danced!

We made a stop in Prairie Village, Kansas on this trip to Kentucky. More specifically, a stop at Beth's booth. I follow Beth's blog "Gathering Dust", and decided to stop by her booth and shop a bit. The Mission Antique Mall is huge, and we spent quite a long time shopping.
